Staying Connected
2025-26

April 2026
Dear Westminster School District Community,
April has been a month of momentum — and across WSD, that momentum is visible in our students' achievements, our staff's dedication, and the strength of the partnerships we are building together.
We are proud to celebrate Stacey Middle School's recognition as a 2026 California Distinguished School in the "Achievement Gap Closers" category — a testament to our educators' commitment to equity and high-level learning for every student. At the same time, our students continue to benefit from expanded pathways in Career Technical Education, college readiness, and hands-on learning experiences that connect the classroom to the real world.
Our work on behalf of students extends well beyond our school walls. From advocating for student needs and local control at the national level in Washington, D.C., to honoring the history rooted right here in our community at the Mendez Freedom Trail dedication, WSD continues to show up where it matters most. We also welcomed Officer Vanessa Campos as our newest School Resource Officer, deepening our commitment to safe, welcoming campuses for every child and family.
Behind each of these moments are the people who make them possible — our classified staff, administrators, teachers, Board members, community partners, and families. As we recognize our 2026 Classified Employees of the Year and Administrators of the Year, we are reminded that excellence in a school district is always a collective achievement.
As we move through the final weeks of the year, I am deeply grateful for your continued trust and partnership. Together, we are building a district where every student is known, supported, and prepared for what comes next.
Kind Regards,
Gunn Marie Hansen, Ph.D. Superintendent

March 2026
Dear Westminster School District Community,
Spring is a season of growth, and across WSD, that growth is visible in our students' achievements, our staff's dedication, and the strength of our community partnerships.
This year, we celebrate important milestones: Stacey Middle School has been named a 2026 California Distinguished School, and Warner Middle School earned the CABE Seal of Excellence for its Dual Language Immersion program. These honors reflect both high achievement and our commitment to equity—ensuring every student is supported, challenged, and empowered.
Our work continues to expand in meaningful ways. A new TK–8 mathematics curriculum is strengthening problem-solving and real-world learning, while innovative enrollment efforts are bringing access directly into our communities. We are building systems that serve the whole child and every family.
Behind every accomplishment are the people who make it possible. Through cultural celebrations like Tết, literacy initiatives during Read Across America Week, and a daily commitment to safe and welcoming campuses, our educators, families, and community partners are shaping something enduring together.
As we move through the remainder of the year, I am deeply grateful for your partnership. Together, we are achieving strong results—and building a district where every student has a feeling of belonging, purpose, and possibility.
Kind Regards,
Gunn Marie Hansen, Ph.D. Superintendent

May 2025
Dear Westminster School District Community,
As we near the close of the 2024–2025 school year, I want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible accomplishments we’ve seen across the Westminster School District. This has been a year marked by resilience, creativity, and academic excellence, and I am filled with pride and gratitude for the hard work of our students, staff, families, and all our educational partners.
This past month has been particularly memorable. We celebrated a major milestone—the 10th anniversary of the Vietnamese Dual Language Immersion (VDLI) program at DeMille Mỹ Việt Language Academy. As the first program of its kind in California, VDLI has grown into a model of bilingual education, empowering students with both language proficiency and cultural awareness. The anniversary celebration was a moving tribute to the power of language and community.
We also witnessed the remarkable talents of our students in the arts through a series of visual and performing arts showcases. From live stage productions to student art exhibits and musical performances, our students demonstrated their creativity, confidence, and commitment to excellence. These celebrations not only highlighted our district’s strong emphasis on arts education, but also reminded us of the many ways our students thrive beyond the classroom.
As we prepare to promote our 8th grade students to high school, we celebrate their achievements and the foundation they’ve built for future success. They leave us as more capable and confident learners, ready to take the next big step in their educational journey.
Looking ahead, we are excited for what the next school year will bring. With new opportunities, continued innovation, and our shared commitment to excellence, I am confident that the best is yet to come for Westminster School District.

May 2024
Dear WSD Families,
As we navigate the advances in educational technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI), our district has taken a proactive approach to integrating AI into our educational framework. Recognizing AI’s dual nature, we have diligently distinguished between its potential benefits and risks; Bad AI can lead to issues like academic dishonesty and diminished critical thinking, while Good AI can enhance creativity, personalize learning, and improve operational efficiency. Our journey and goal for the 2023-24 school year began with a commitment to educate our leaders and staff before introducing AI to our students, ensuring a robust understanding and ethical application of AI technologies. Since the inception of our
AI initiative in August 2023, we have made significant strides, starting with an extensive assessment of the current state of AI, followed by aligning our vision and strategy with educational goals. We conducted an AI Roadshow to engage and train our leadership, staff, and parents, launched AI pilots focusing on generative AI and educational technology, and are forming an AI Task Force to provide guidance and policy development. These actions have and will equip our educators with the tools to integrate AI effectively into instructional planning, enhancing learning experiences and operational processes. Looking ahead to the 2024-25 school year, we are excited about our continued exploration and implementation of AI in our classrooms, focusing on expanding AI professional development, fostering AI literacy among students, and refining our AI pilots based on feedback and data analysis. By
doing so, we aim to cultivate an environment where AI serves as a valuable partner in education, preparing our students for a future where AI will be an integral part of their lives. Together, we are committed to leveraging AI to inspire and empower every leader, educator, parent, and learner in the Westminster School District.
Sincerely,
Gunn Marie Hansen, Ph.D.

April 2024
Dear Westminster School District (WSD) Community,
We are racing towards the end of the year, but there’s still a lot to celebrate, recognize, and honor. We are incredibly proud of all our students and staff for staying focused and wrapping up the school year.
This month, our district hosted the annual Anderson Elementary Special Olympics. This long-standing tradition has been a part of the district for over a decade, bringing together law enforcement, families, students, and staff to celebrate the achievements and talents, and remember the students who passed away over the years in the district’s
special needs community.
The event is a day filled with exuberance, sportsmanship, friendship, and kindness. Students partook in a variety of athletic events showcasing their skills, determination, and teamwork. It was an opportunity for all our students and staff to demonstrate what WSD INSPIRES! truly represents, fostering a sense of inclusion and empowerment within the school and the community.
WSD also recognized Black April, the annual commemoration of the fall of Saigon and the end of the Vietnam War. During our board meeting, President Frances Nguyen presented a slideshow that showed the hardships and struggles that were endured on April 30, 1975. This solemn event honors the sacrifices of Vietnamese soldiers, as well as the journeys of Vietnamese refugees who found new homes around the world, including in the local community.
Finally, the district celebrated its classified staff, including bus drivers, as part of the WSD INSPIRES! initiative to recognize the contributions of all members of the school community. We always look for ways in the district to honor our staff. It is one way for us to show our appreciation and gratitude for the hard work. Bus Drivers are the first and last
smiling faces that our students see every day. Thank you for all that you do.
I look forward to all the promotions and awards ceremonies coming up. It is the best time of year when we get to celebrate all the achievements that our students and staff have made.
Sincerely,
Gunn Marie Hansen, Ph.D.

March 2024
Dear Westminster School District (WSD) Community,
As we welcome the arrival of spring, I am filled with excitement and the WSD INSPIRES! mentality to continue working hard for the last stretch of the school year. March has been a month of vibrant celebrations and remarkable achievements within our district, and I am honored to share these updates with you.
First and foremost, I want to take a moment to recognize the outstanding achievements of our staff and students. This month, we held our annual Foundation Awards ceremony, where we celebrated the exceptional accomplishments of our students and their road to success. It was truly inspiring to see our community come together to honor the hard work, dedication, and passion that our students and staff put into their work every day.
During this month, WSD partnered with Westminster High School (WHS) in the Huntington Beach Union High School District to bridge our Vietnamese Dual Language Immersion Program (VDLI) at Demille and Warner. The collaboration between WSD and WHS represents a significant milestone in promoting linguistic diversity and cultural
Proficiency within every VDLI students’ academic journey. The VDLI program at WSD garnered a myriad of publicity for being the first VDLI program in the state of California. Now, with the partnership with Westminster High School, WSD is the first Vietnamese Dual Immersion Program Pre-K through 12th Grade program in the nation. Cementing us
as one of the premier districts in Orange County and nation.
These incredible achievements are a testament to the vibrant, inclusive, and supportive community we have built together. I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has played a role in making our district a place where academic excellence, diversity, and community are recognized.
As we look ahead to the remainder of the school year, I am excited for the upcoming events, celebrations, and ongoing community collaborations we cultivate. Let’s continue to aspire to inspire our students and the WSD community.
Sincerely,
Gunn Marie Hansen, Ph.D.

Dear Westminster School District Community,
As we reflect on the vibrant celebrations of the Tet Parade, Tet Festival, and Lunar New Year festivities that have taken place across our district over the past month, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude. These events not only brought our community together but also provided a wonderful opportunity for us to embrace and celebrate the rich
cultural diversity that makes our district so unique.
The Tet Parade, with its colorful floats, traditional music, and spirited performances, was a sight to behold. I am proud that WSD was the title sponsor of the parade this year; with our students leading off the Opening Ceremony with their incredible performance. It was heartwarming to see students, staff, and families come together, showcasing the
unity and strength of our community. The Tet Festival enriched our understanding and appreciation of Vietnamese culture, offering us a glimpse of the arts, language, and traditions. Students and staff from our Vietnamese Dual Language Immersion program, showed up in full force to perform and support at the WSD booth. The Lunar New Year
celebrations, marking the beginning of a new year on the lunisolar calendar, were filled with joy and hope, symbolizing new beginnings and the promise of a prosperous year ahead.
At the recent California Association of Bilingual Education Conference (CABE), Westminster School District showcased the dedication and talent of its students, staff, and team. Our staff presented at various workshops, our students delivered captivating performances, and our Board members presented the Republic of Vietnam flag to the CABE team as a symbol of unity and cultural appreciation. We are proud of our community's active involvement in
this event, highlighting our commitment to bilingual education.
These celebrations are a testament to the vibrant, inclusive, and supportive community we have together. I want to extend my thanks to everyone who played a part in organizing and participating in these events. Your enthusiasm, creativity, and dedication have made these celebrations a success. I am continually impressed by the talent and commitment of our students, staff, and families, and it is a privilege to be a part of such an inspiring district.
As we look ahead, let us continue to celebrate our diversity and support one another. I look forward to attending many more events this year.

January 2024
Dear WSD Community,
We just wrapped up the first trimester and welcomed the New Year!
There is a lot for our staff, students and families to look forward to over the next few months. This year we are Title Sponsors for the annual Tet Parade (Saturday, February 10) hosted by The City of Westminster. Our students will be performing during the opening ceremony and Board Members will be recognized as well. We are excited to participate in
this incredible cultural event.
As superintendent, I am proud of the perseverance our students have demonstrated over the past few months of school; the hard work they put into academics, community events, and sports competitions. These are the many ways the Westminster School District provides a thriving learning environment for our students.
A reminder to all families and staff to read our 2023-2029 Strategic Plan, a coherent roadmap to guide the district and achieve its agreed upon goals and objectives. The plan provides the framework for guiding our direction through 2029 and helps to distinguish Westminster School District as a world-class, first choice public school system that students and families select for success. This new strategic plan offers direction for the future and serves as our commitment to priorities in providing quality educational programs to students. It serves as a declaration of vision, mission, and core values that guide our collaborative work, and the plan for internal and external accountability.
We are thankful for all of the WSD families, who continue to put their trust in us to care for their children.
With warm regards,
Superintendent,
Dr. Gunn Marie Hansen

December 2023
Dear WSD Community,
Westminster School District continues to thrive in our community connections by extending our outreach beyond our own community. Part of the District’s Strategic Plan focuses on WSD fostering and cultivating strong relationships. We continue to actively engage with our community members through district-sponsored events and collaborate with the City of Westminster at various activities and celebrations.
It is also the first year that we have gone beyond Westminster to participate in other city events. The heartwarming participation of our choir students from Anderson and Meairs in the City of Garden Grove's Winter in the Grove event demonstrates the joy and happiness that our collective efforts continue to bring to hundreds of people. Families, staff, and students were thrilled to participate in the celebration and get in the holiday spirit during this time of year.
As superintendent, I am extremely proud of the continued participation from all school sites. This month, I attended my first Academic Innovation Showcase at Stacey Middle School. The event serves as a testament to our goal to become the premier Pre K - 8 district in Orange County. Our pursuit to achieve that will come to fruition as we continue to embody the passion driving excellence in all that we do. There is much focus on innovation, diversity, and academic achievement, as we are committed to shaping the future of our students
and the communities we are privileged to serve.
I look forward to attending more community and district events as WSD continues to celebrate additional awards and accolades. I wish everyone a healthy and safe holiday season, and I am excited to see what we achieve in the new year.

Our district continues to follow our Strategic Plan and WSDINSPIRES! Over the last couple of months, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting more students, staff, teachers, and administrators during my site visits. Westminster School District students are in great hands with all of our teachers, and we are thrilled that we have the most premier teachers who are leading the way in every child’s education. To that end, we also want to ensure our students’ physical and mental well-being is always a top priority.
This month, we celebrated National Walk & Roll to School Day. Police officers from Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, and the Westminster Police Department partnered with the district and participated in this nationwide campaign. The goal of the event was to encourage students to live a healthy lifestyle and to walk and bike to school periodically.
This was the first time in WSD’s history that we coordinated a tri-city collaboration and had at least one police officer at every school site throughout the morning. Students were all smiles and giddy when they were greeted by our local heroes. There was a strong sense of camaraderie and extra security when law enforcement was at the school sites. It was a good way to show students that our police officers are here to protect, but can also have genuine conversations with the boys and girls.
With all this fun and enjoyment, it is still a good reminder to families that WSD continues to prioritize all our students’ health and safety. Our ongoing collaboration with the three Police Departments is a direct result of why we receive gold standard response times.

Dear WSD Community,
As we close out the first full month of school, there was a lot to celebrate and look forward to this school year.
WSD rolled out the new six-year Strategic Plan and district website, which will help immensely with the marketing and promotion of WSD. Our goal is to implement the focus areas in the plan to ensure continuous improvement in all areas of District operations. This is a coherent roadmap that will provide guidance and direction for us over the next few years. This collaborative effort to create a new Strategic Plan is a result of the involvement and partnerships from our community partners, staff, and parents.
Our Spanish and Vietnamese Dual Language Immersion programs showcased their abilities at multiple events in September. We are so proud of them for their relentless efforts to always show up when called upon.
In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, WSD is proud to have partnered with the Museum of Teaching and Learning (MOTAL) and Coast Community College District to present to our community the exhibit A Class Action: The Grassroots Struggle for School Desegregation. This interactive exhibit discusses the story of the landmark Mendez et al. v. Westminster School District case - along with the four other families that fought to desegregate schools in Orange County.
We look forward to coordinating student tours this month - the exhibit will be on display until the end of November.
Warmest Regards,
Gunn Marie Hansen, Ph. D.
