May 13, 2026
On the evening of May 13, 2026, three Westminster School District students were celebrated at Angel Stadium as part of the eighth-grade AVID Standout Night, presented in partnership with the Orange County Department of Education and the Angels Baseball Foundation. The program honors exceptional AVID students across Orange County for their academic achievement, resilience, leadership, and commitment to higher education.
This year, Westminster School District had one student recognized from each of its three middle schools. In a remarkable achievement for the district, two of those students — Laurie Le of Johnson Middle School and Katie Rojas of Warner Middle School — were selected to receive $10,000 scholarships, two of only eight awarded countywide through this highly competitive program. Alexandrea Pauli of Stacey Middle School was also honored as an AVID Angel Standout.
Laurie, a 4.0 student and National Junior Honor Society member, aspires to become a pediatrician and attend UC Irvine. Katie is a community advocate and Chief Science Officer recognized for her leadership, volunteerism, and academic excellence. Alexandrea has been celebrated by staff and peers since sixth grade for her kindness, integrity, and commitment to her academics and her school community.
"We are incredibly proud of Laurie, Katie, and Alexandrea," said Gunn Marie Hansen, Ph.D. "This recognition is a reflection of what happens when students have access to strong support systems and believe in their own potential. The AVID program plays a vital role in Westminster School District, and Laurie, Katie, and Alexandrea are powerful examples of what our students are capable of achieving."

Westminster School District Students Shine at Annual MATHCOUNTS Competition
April 30, 2026
WESTMINSTER, CA — Westminster School District (WSD) students demonstrated outstanding academic excellence on Saturday, April 25, when teams from Warner, Stacey, and Johnson Middle Schools competed at the Annual MATHCOUNTS Competition hosted at Johnson Middle School. The event brought together more than 200 students from 38 public and private schools across Southern California.
Warner Middle School had a standout performance, earning both 2nd and 3rd place overall among all competing teams. A team from Johnson Middle School also distinguished itself by finishing in the top eight. Students in grades 6 through 8 tackled complex, multi-step math problems that challenged their thinking well beyond grade-level standards, demonstrating the depth of academic preparation WSD students receive.
The competition was sponsored by the Vietnamese-American Aerospace Professional Association (VAAPA), whose generous support provided trophies, certificates, and cash awards recognizing top-performing teams.
"Days like this are a reflection of the extraordinary students, families, and educators that make Westminster School District special," said Gunn Marie Hansen, Ph.D., Superintendent of Westminster School District. "We are incredibly proud of every student who competed, and grateful to VAAPA for creating an event that celebrates student achievement in STEM."
Beyond the results, the competition highlighted the qualities that define WSD students — persistence, teamwork, and a genuine excitement for learning. Events like MATHCOUNTS reflect the district's ongoing commitment to preparing students for success in STEM fields and beyond.

Westminster School District Secures $2.39 Million in Taxpayer Savings Through Successful Bond Refinancing
April 2, 2026
Families across the district will see lower property tax costs after the district secured $2.39 million in taxpayer savings through a successful bond refinancing completed April 1, 2026. The Board approved the refinancing on January 22, 2026, when savings were initially estimated at $2.0 million — a figure the district ultimately exceeded.
"This refinancing is a direct reflection of the financial discipline Westminster School District has maintained over many years," said Manuel Cardoso, Assistant Superintendent of Business Services. "The trust investors placed in us helped deliver savings that are real and meaningful for the families in our community, and we're proud we were able to make this happen even in a volatile market."
As part of the refinancing process, the Moody Credit Rating Chart affirmed the District's 'Aa2' bond rating, citing the district's strong fiscal management, property wealth, and overall financial health.
On the day of the bond sale, the district received over $99 million in orders for the $28 million in available bonds — a subscription rate of 3.6 times the amount offered. Orders came from 15 unique investor groups as well as individual retail investors. The overwhelming demand gave the district's underwriter the leverage to further lower the overall interest rate, ultimately achieving very competitive borrowing costs despite recent market volatility. Inclusive of all fees, the final interest rate was 3.09%.
"We are very pleased with the outcome of the refinancing," said Gunn Marie Hansen, Ph.D., Superintendent. "When we became aware of a refinancing opportunity that would help our community and taxpayers, our Board and our team did not hesitate to pursue it. Despite the volatility in the market, we were still able to secure significant savings for our taxpayers."
The refinancing will close on May 7, 2026.

Westminster, CA – Stacey Middle School in the Westminster School District in Orange County is proud to announce that its’ stellar speller, Katelyn Nguyen, has emerged victorious as the Orange County Spelling Bee Champion. Katelyn's remarkable spelling abilities have secured her a shot at the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. next week.
