Students are identified for GATE locally in each district. Categories for identification may include one or more of the following: intellectual, creative, specific academic, or leadership ability; high achievement; performing and visual arts talent; or any other criterion that meets the standards set forth by the State Board of Education (SBE). The GATE program is authorized under Education Code (EC) sections 52200-52212.

Parents must sign a "Permission to Test/Participate" form in order for their child to be tested.

These forms will be available during Parent/Teacher Conference for those students who meet the GATE testing criteria.


By law (California Education Code Section 60800), all public local educational agencies in California are required to administer the Physical Fitness Test (PFT) annually to all students in grades five, seven, and nine. The PFT provides information that can be used by (1) students to assess levels of health ­related fitness and to plan personal fitness programs; (2) teachers to design the curriculum for physical education programs; (3) parents and guardians to understand their child’s fitness levels; and (4) by teachers, parents, and guardians to monitor changes in the student's fitness levels.
