Understanding PBIS at WSD
Not a policy. A culture practiced every single day.
PBIS — Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports — is a proactive, evidence-based approach to school climate. Instead of reacting to problems, WSD schools teach and reinforce the behaviors that create a respectful, inclusive community from the start.
Every child feels genuinely welcomed here.
Through daily lessons, peer recognition, and programs like Second Step and Digital Citizenship, students at every WSD school learn how to treat others with kindness, resolve conflict calmly, and look out for one another — in person and online.

Earning PBIS Platinum — the state’s highest recognition for positive school culture
Stacey Middle School earned the prestigious PBIS Platinum Award for 2016, 2024, and 2025, becoming one of the first schools in California to reach this level. It reflects years of proactive, data-driven work by educators, staff, and families — and a school culture where every student is empowered to thrive. Warner Middle School also received PBIS Platinum in 2025.
How The Program Works

Proactive training
Year-round workshops for students, staff, and parents build conflict resolution skills, social-emotional learning, and shared expectations for behavior across every campus.
Second Step curriculum
An evidence-based social-emotional learning program taught in every WSD classroom, helping students develop empathy, manage emotions, and solve problems constructively.
Digital citizenship
In partnership with Common Sense Education, students learn to navigate the online world responsibly — understanding cyberbullying, digital footprints, and safe internet behavior.
Peer recognition
Students are celebrated for demonstrating kindness and respect. Recognition programs build a positive school identity where doing the right thing is publicly valued.
MTSS — whole-child support
Multi-Tiered System of Supports provides targeted, tiered interventions for students who need additional academic, behavioral, or emotional support — ensuring no student is left behind.
Data-driven improvement
Schools continuously monitor behavioral data to adapt programs, respond early, and make informed decisions — keeping the focus on student outcomes, not just compliance.
