Founded in 1872, the Westminster School District (WSD) has left an indelible mark on the educational landscape of Orange County, California. Situated in the heart of the county, WSD has been dedicated to providing quality education to the young minds of the region for over a century.
Spanning across Westminster, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, and Midway City, WSD serves as a crucial hub for nearly 8,200 elementary and middle school students in 17 schools. Its diverse student body reflects the vibrant communities it serves, fostering a rich cultural and social environment.
One of the pivotal moments in WSD's history occurred during the landmark case of Mendez vs. Board of Education in the mid-20th century. The district played a significant role in promoting equal educational opportunities for all students, regardless of their race or ethnicity.
In recent years, WSD has consistently demonstrated its commitment to excellence in education. Garnering national recognition, the district was named one of just 26 in California to receive the prestigious Honor Roll School District distinction. This accolade acknowledged WSD's dedication to high performance and improved outcomes for its students.
Numerous other prestigious awards have adorned the district's walls, including the California Pivotal Practice awards for 13 of its schools and the district office. Additionally, WSD has been the recipient of the CSBA Golden Bell, Title I Schools, and California Distinguished School awards for the past three years, further solidifying its status as an educational trailblazer.
Determined to offer a wide array of opportunities to its students, WSD has gone above and beyond traditional academic offerings. Specialized programs such as Vietnamese and Spanish Dual Language Immersion, computer science, GATE (Gifted and Talented Education), AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), STEM/STEAM, and College & Career Readiness have been integrated into the curriculum. Notably, the district launched the state's first Vietnamese Language Dual Immersion program in 2015, paving the way for a truly unique and inclusive educational experience.
