WSD Students Earn 2nd and 3rd Place at Annual MATHCOUNTS Competition

On Saturday, April 25, Johnson Middle School proudly hosted the Fifth Annual MATHCOUNTS Competition, welcoming more than 200 students from 38 public and private schools across Southern California. Among them were teams representing Warner, Stacey, and Johnson Middle Schools — and our students showed up ready to compete.
Warner Middle School had an exceptional day, earning both 2nd and 3rd place overall. A Johnson Middle School team also made its mark, finishing in the top eight among all participating schools. Throughout the competition, WSD students tackled challenging problems that pushed their mathematical thinking well beyond grade-level expectations, all while demonstrating the teamwork and persistence that reflect the character of our community.

“Hosting this competition at Johnson has always been special, and it was truly amazing to see what our district students are capable of,” said Daniel Owens, Principal of Johnson Middle School. “It was incredible to watch them step up to the challenge, stay focused under pressure, and support each other throughout the day. Events like this are why we do what we do. We're not just building math skills, but helping students grow into confident, resilient young people who know they belong in these spaces."

The event was sponsored by the Vietnamese-American Aerospace Professional Association (VAAPA), which provided trophies, certificates, and cash awards to recognize top-performing teams. Their continued investment in student achievement makes competitions like this possible and meaningful.
"Days like this are a reflection of the extraordinary students, families, and educators that make Westminster School District special," said Gunn Marie Hansen, Ph.D., Superintendent of Westminster School District. "Our students did not just compete; they represented our community with excellence, integrity, and heart. We are deeply proud of every student who took the floor on Saturday, and grateful to VAAPA for championing student achievement in STEM year after year."
