Three Times Distinguished: What It Really Means When a School Closes the Gap

Most schools earn a major state distinction once and celebrate it for years. Helen Stacey Middle School in Westminster School District has now earned it for the third time.

The California Department of Education has named Stacey Middle School a 2026 California Distinguished School — one of the state’s highest honors for public education. The designation places Stacey among a select group of schools across California recognized this year for exceptional student outcomes.

But the specific category matters. Stacey earned the recognition as an Achievement Gap Closer — a designation reserved for schools that significantly accelerate academic progress for historically underserved student groups while maintaining strong outcomes for all students. It is a distinction that is difficult to earn — and even more difficult to sustain.

Stacey has now earned this recognition three times: 2021, 2024, and 2026.

“This recognition reflects our commitment to inspire every student, every day by ensuring all learners are supported, challenged, and empowered to succeed,” said Gunn Marie Hansen, Ph.D., Superintendent, Westminster School District.

What the recognition actually means

The designation is awarded through the California School Dashboard, the state’s multi-indicator accountability system, and announced by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond. It is not based on nominations or surveys. It is determined entirely by verified student performance data.

What that data reflects at Stacey is a school where students who need the most support receive it — and where that support translates into measurable academic growth, year after year.

Three recognitions. Five years. One consistent commitment.

Stacey was first honored in 2021. Then again in 2024. And now in 2026. That pattern reflects more than a single strong year; it reflects a school culture built on consistent systems, dedicated educators, and a belief that every student deserves the opportunity to succeed.

Stacey Middle School will be formally recognized alongside distinguished schools from across California at the California School Recognition Program Awards Ceremony on April 24, 2026, at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim.“This recognition is a reflection of our commitment to ensure all students learn at high levels. At Stacey, we have built a culture grounded in collaboration, innovation, and a shared responsibility to prepare every student for college and career. This honor is made possible through the collective efforts of our dedicated teachers, driven students, and supportive parents working together in partnership,” said Rick Nichols, principal of Helen Stacey Middle School.

What this means for families

For families in Westminster and surrounding communities, this recognition offers something valuable: independent, data-verified confirmation that Stacey delivers strong outcomes for every student.
